DESPICABLE ME MINIONS

We all love these cute, pill-shaped, little banana and apple loving evil lab assistants, though truth be told, these little creatures are far from being evil. They are capable of caring (remember Agnes’s unicorn toy?), and showing affection. (Bedtime kiss from Gru!)

They also have real-life names, such as, Dave, Mark, Jerry, Stuart, Bob, Phil, Tim and Jorge.

MINION HISTORY

Minions are small, yellow pill-like creatures who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from single-celled organisms into beings who have only one purpose: to serve history’s most villainous bosses. They successfully find great masters, including a T. Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian pharaoh, Dracula, and Napoleon, but after accidentally executing them all soon after, they decide to isolate themselves from the world and start a new life in Antarctica. By 1968, the lack of a master drives them into depression, so fearless lead Minion Kevin comes up with a plan to find a new one for his Minion-kind. He is joined by rebellious teenage Minion Stuart (who unwittingly was selected) and lovable kid Minion Bob (due to his begging ams lack of volunteers).

After a long journey, the Minions arrive at New York, where at a shopping center on TV, they learn about Villain-Con, a villain convention where supervillains from around the world gather, which is to be held in Orlando, Florida. They manage to hitch a ride to Orlando, where coincidentally, the family who drove them are criminals heading to Villain-Con as well. After seeing various supervillains, they finally become the henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first female supervillain.

Scarlet takes the Minions to her residence in London, where she instructs the Minions to steal St Edward’s Crown from Queen Elizabeth II for her, threatening to execute them if they fail. With the help of the weapons of Herb, Scarlet’s husband, the Minions successfully break into the Tower of London, However, the crown has already been delivered to the palace. The Minions steal the crown from the Queen’s carriage, destroying the carriage in the process, while pursued by the police. In the process, Bob crash lands on the mythical Sword in the Stone, where he pulls the sword Excalibur out easily to defend himself. Elizabeth is then removed from the throne, and Bob is crowned as the new King of the United Kingdom.

Convinced they are traitors, Scarlet confronts the Minions, attempting to execute them, then she craves her revenge. King Bob eventually abdicates in Scarlet’s favor. However, Scarlet ultimately betrays the Minions, locking them in the palace dungeon where they are to be tortured by Herb, although this backfires due to their unusual shapes and abilities. When Herb goes to attend his wife’s coronation, the Minions escape the dungeon through a sewer, intending on apologizing to Scarlet.

At Westminster Abbey, the Minions accidentally interrupt Scarlet’s coronation by unscrewing a chandelier, which falls and crushes Scarlet before she could be crowned. Scarlet orders the attendees of the coronation, some of which are super-villains, to execute the Minions. Stuart and Bob are captured while Kevin hides in a bar, where he finds Elizabeth working there. After learning that Scarlet is going to execute Stuart and Bob, Kevin breaks into Herb’s laboratory, where he triggers a machine which turns him into a giant and destroys the Overkill residence.

Kevin rescues his companions from execution as the army of Minions arrive in London. Scarlet is distracted by the army of Minions and Kevin knocks her away, however the supervillain attempts to escape with Herb using her dress rocket. Before escaping, Kevin is able to hold onto her rocket, seemingly killing her and Herb and shrinking himself back to his original size.

Elizabeth is once again crowned Queen of the United Kingdom and, in front of a crowd, presents Bob, Stuart, and Kevin with their rewards: a tiny crown for Bob, an electric guitar (later replaced by a snowglobe) for Stuart and a knighthood respectively for Kevi. Scarlet is suddenly revealed to be alive and snatches the Queen’s crown with Herb, but she is stopped and frozen by young Gru. Scarlett is disappointed until Bob gives her his tiny crown. At the end of the film, the Minions see Gru as their new potential boss and chase after him, setting up the plot for Despicable Me.

MINION TRIVIAS:

  • There are only 5 natural hairstyles for Minions in the Despicable Me films, including being bald.
  • Tall minions all have the same haircut.
  • The Minions were partly inspired by the Jawas in the original Star Wars franchise, and the Oompa Loompas in Willy Wonka.
  • The evil Minions are purple because purple and yellow are on opposite sides of the color spectrum.
  • The minions have only 3 fingers.
  • The minions are genderless.

EVIL MINIONS

In Despicable Movie 2 we are introduced to a new minion called the “evil minion” which is purple in color. They have frizzled hair with misshapen teeth, though they also share the love for banana and mischief. They are basically minions injected with the mutagen PX-41 which turns them into an indestructible killing machine.

Despicable Me 1 Story

Gru, a supervillain, is disheartened when an unknown supervillain steals the Great Pyramid of Giza. Gru resolves to do better, with the assistance of his colleague Dr. Nefario and his Minions, by shrinking and stealing the Moon. As it would be costly to shrink and steal the moon, Gru seeks a loan from the Bank of Evil. Bank president Mr. Perkins is impressed by the plan, but will provide the money only if Gru can obtain the necessary shrink ray first.

Gru and the Minions steal the shrink ray from a secret base in East Asia, but the up-and-coming supervillain, Vector, who was also responsible for the Pyramid theft, immediately steals it from Gru. Gru attempts to break into Vector’s fortress to recover the shrink ray, but is defeated by numerous booby traps. However, he notices three orphan girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, who are able to easily walk into the base because they are selling cookies. Gru disguises himself and adopts the girls, planning on using them to infiltrate Vector’s base so he can get the shrink ray back. However, Gru has trouble nurturing them properly due to their rambunctiousness, their ballet classes, and his own ineptitude as a parent.

Eventually, Gru and the girls arrive at Vector’s fortress and Gru steals the shrink ray. The girls then suggest a day at a theme park; Gru agrees, believing he can abandon the girls there, but instead he warms up to them. Later, Gru contacts Mr. Perkins via video chat, stating that he finally has the shrink ray. Margo, Edith, and Agnes interrupt the meeting, and Perkins announces that he has lost confidence in Gru and will no longer fund his operations. As Gru tells the Minions he can no longer pay them for their services, the girls offer the contents of their piggy bank. Gru, inspired, sells parts of his lair to construct a spacecraft.

Gru plans to steal the Moon when it is nearest the Earth, but this is the same day as the girls’ ballet recital. Gru becomes conflicted, and Dr. Nefario, seeing the recital as interfering with the plan, arranges for the girls to be returned to the orphanage. At the same time, Mr. Perkins informs Vector (who is revealed to be his son) of Gru’s possession of the shrink ray and the adoption of the three girls, encouraging Vector to act.

Gru successfully shrinks and steals the Moon, and rushes back to Earth to attend the recital — only to find a ransom note from Vector, who has kidnapped the girls. After arriving at Vector’s headquarters, Gru surrenders the Moon, but Vector reneges on the deal, flying off with the girls and the Moon. Meanwhile, Dr. Nefario has discovered that the effects of the shrink ray are temporary; the bigger the object’s original size, the faster the shrinkage will wear off. As the Moon starts to expand in Vector’s ship, Gru, Dr. Nefario, and the Minions execute a daring mid-air rescue of the girls just as the Moon explodes out of Vector’s ship and launches itself back into orbit, with Vector trapped on it.

Sometime later, Gru has returned the Great Pyramid and re-adopted the girls, writing them a bedtime storybook framed around his own experience. The film ends with the girls performing their own ballet recital for Gru, his mother Marlena, Dr. Nefario, and the Minions.

Despicable Me 2 Story

A mysterious vehicle using a huge magnet steals a highly potent mutagen known as PX-41 from a secret laboratory in the Arctic Circle. The Anti-Villain League (AVL), headed by Silas Ramsbottom, tries to recruit former supervillain Gru to track down those responsible and recover the mutagen, but Gru refuses, claiming that he is now a legitimate businessman as well as the devoted father of Margo, Edith, and Agnes. Dr. Nefario, Gru’s friend and assistant, “misses being evil” and leaves Gru for new employment. Gru reluctantly agrees to investigate the theft, and is partnered with undercover AVL agent Lucy Wilde.

The pair begin their search in the Paradise Shopping Mall, disguised as bakery employees. Gru immediately comes to suspect Mexican restaurant owner, Eduardo Pérez, of being the infamous “El Macho”, a legendary supervillain who supposedly died after riding a shark into the center of an active volcano with dynamite strapped to his chest. Gru and Lucy break into Eduardo’s restaurant at night, but find no proof. Meanwhile, Agnes, confiding in her dream to one day have a mother, believes that Gru will fall in love with Lucy, though Gru states that his relationship with Lucy is professional.

Although holding Eduardo as his chief suspect, Gru agrees to pursue others, including wig merchant Floyd Eagle-san. After witnessing Eduardo’s two-timing son, Antonio, woo Margo and invite everyone to his Cinco de Mayo party, Gru renews his focus on Eduardo. He is then set up on a dinner date with a vacuous woman named Shannon. The date goes horribly, and Shannon is about to humiliate Gru after she spots his wig, until Lucy, visiting the restaurant herself, saves Gru and renders Shannon unconscious with a tranquilizer gun. While they take Shannon home, Gru and Lucy spend personal time together, and Gru falls in love with her, proving Agnes right.

The next day, the AVL arrest Eagle-san after finding an almost-empty jar of the mutagen in his shop, and the investigation is closed by Ramsbottom. Lucy is reassigned to Australia, but gives Gru her lipstick Taser as a gift before leaving. A heartbroken Gru, having lacked the courage to ask Lucy out on a date, instead takes his girls to the Cinco de Mayo party. While there, he follows Eduardo and discovers a secret musical steps-activated elevator, where he finally finds proof that Eduardo is El Macho.

On her flight, Lucy, realizing that she has also fallen in love with Gru, jumps out of the plane and hang glides down to the party. Gru discovers that Macho and his partner, Nefario, have been abducting Gru’s Minions and using the stolen PX-41 serum to mutate them into violet, savage and hairy “Evil Minions”. Macho plans to launch rockets full of the mutated Minions into major cities in order to achieve world domination. He gives Gru the chance to team up with him, but Gru walks away.

Lucy later arrives at the party, but Macho captures Lucy after Pollito, Macho’s pet chicken, retrieves her AVL ID badge from her purse. Nefario rejoins Gru, who fakes being captured with two other minions to help him rescue Lucy. Fighting alongside his daughters and Nefario, Gru and his team return the Minions to their normal, friendly, yellow state using jelly containing a powerful antidote that was created by Nefario. Macho then takes the mutagen himself and turns into a giant violet-haired monster, but Gru and Nefario defeat him using Lucy’s lipstick Taser and a fart gun.

Gru finds Lucy strapped to a TNT-loaded shark rocket and starts to untie her, but Pollito launches the rocket, sending it flying towards the same volcano where Macho previously faked his death. Lucy accepts Gru’s invitation for a date, and the pair dive into the ocean seconds before the rocket enters the volcano and violently explodes. After a comical 147 dates, Gru and Lucy get married, and Margo, Edith and Agnes finally have someone close to a mother.

Despicable Me 3 Story

Gru, now an agent for the Anti-Villain League (AVL), manages to foil supervillain Balthazar Bratt’s robbery of the world’s most expensive diamond, but is unable to capture him. Bratt was a former child actor who portrayed a young supervillain in a popular television series before the show was cancelled as a result of his puberty, and his waning popularity led to him adopting his former persona to become an actual supervillain. As a result of constantly failing to capture Bratt, Gru and his wife Lucy are relieved of duty by new AVL director Valerie Da Vinci.

Gru and Lucy reluctantly tell their children, Margo, Edith and Agnes of their firing, but assure them that they will find new jobs someday. Most of Gru’s Minions leave Gru when he refuses to return to villainy despite losing his job. Lucy struggles to adapt in her new role as the children’s new mom. The next morning, the family is approached by the butler of Gru’s long-lost twin brother, Dru, who longs to meet him. Stunned at this revelation, Gru confronts his mother, who reveals that after divorcing Gru’s father, they agreed to keep one child each. The family decide to meet Dru, and they are surprised at his immense wealth, which the butler attributes to their pig farm business. Dru quickly charms Gru’s family despite turning off Gru due to his flamboyant personality. Meanwhile, the Minions are arrested after trespassing a talent show set, and Bratt manages to steal the diamond once again, as he intends to use the diamond to power his giant robot to destroy Hollywood as revenge for cancelling his show.

While Lucy takes the children around the surrounding towns, Dru reveals to Gru that his immense wealth is due to his father also being a legendary supervillain. As Dru was constantly dismissed by their father as a disgrace, he turned to his brother to teach him how to be a villain, but Gru is unwilling to revert back to his old ways. To persuade him, Dru brings him on a joyride around the island in their father’s car, where the siblings bond. Meanwhile, Lucy tries to balance being generous and implementing discipline as a mom, which she exhibits after turning away a young boy who had fallen for Margo. The Minions exert control among the prisoners at their jail, but their longing for Gru motivate them to escape the prison.

Having discovered that Bratt has stolen the diamond, Dru convinces Gru to steal the diamond for one last heist, with Gru secretly intending to bring it to the AVL to reinstate his work. Despite several setbacks, they manage to retrieve the diamond back, but they are rescued by Lucy, who had followed them earlier. After finding out Gru’s true motives, Dru confronts his brother on why he lied to him, with the latter insulting him in the process and deciding to leave Dru’s mansion. Bratt infiltrates Dru’s mansion by disguising as Lucy, kidnaps the children and once again acquires the diamond, which leads Gru, Lucy and Dru to resolve their differences and pursue him.

With his robot powered, Bratt terrorizes Hollywood. Having watched Bratt’s show as a child, Dru deduces that Bratt plans to re-enact the episode where Bratt cuts off Hollywood and uses inflatable gum to elevate the city to outer space. Lucy saves the children, while Gru and Dru weaken Bratt’s robot with the weapons of their father’s car. Gru is knocked unconscious when the car is destroyed, and Dru destroys the robot’s core from the inside when Bratt threatens to kill Gru. When Gru recovers, he battles Bratt in a “dance fight” which ends in Gru trapping Bratt in his own gum. The Minions, having rendezvoused with Gru, manage to destroy Bratt’s gum covering the city.

Gru and Lucy are reinstated in the AVL and the newly united family celebrate in Gru’s home. Lucy is acknowledged by the children as their mother. Dru and the Minions steal Gru’s car, as villainy is their family tradition, but Gru and Lucy decide to give them a five-minute headstart.
